A VMware alternative should provide enterprise-grade HA and resilience that goes beyond simple node failure. Evaluation should include host, network, storage, guest OS, and accelerated workload scenarios, with storage-layer redundancy that maintains replica protection during rebuild, not only after recovery completes. SR-IOV and vGPU workloads also require explicit HA design because they cannot be treated like ordinary live-migratable VMs.
Enterprise-grade HA is not binary — it is a spectrum. Enterprise infrastructure platforms must provide comprehensive HA, DRS, workload placement policies, non-disruptive rolling upgrades, and storage-layer redundancy that maintains full replica protection during disk rebuild — not just after recovery completes. The alternative should be able to address nine failure scenarios:
Host/hypervisor: Node failure and hypervisor crash restart VMs on surviving nodes. Multi-node power outages require explicit recovery logic — restore-triggered HA differs from single-node failure.
Network: Cluster isolation creates split-brain risk without quorum-aware fencing. VM-level network failure — node healthy, VM connectivity lost — is invisible to host-level detection; per-VM NIC monitoring is required.
Storage: Path and storage-network failures must trigger node isolation and rebuild that maintains replica counts throughout recovery, not only on completion.
Guest OS: Unresponsive VMs require heartbeat-based detection independent of host liveness.
Accelerated workloads: SR-IOV and vGPU VMs cannot live-migrate; HA coverage requires explicit design for device-assigned workloads.
Most platforms cover only infrastructure-layer failures. The network, storage, application, and accelerated-workload scenarios require explicit architectural design to address.
